Welcome to the next horizon of innovation in transportation. Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is ushering in the third revolution in aerospace through the introduction of an emerging transportation system using highly automated aircraft with advanced technologies that promise a safe, efficient, affordable, and sustainable new way to travel.

To foster collaboration and ensure continued American leadership in aviation in the face of rapidly advancing AAM technologies, the Advanced Air Mobility Interagency Working Group (AAM IWG) is spearheading efforts to develop a national strategy for AAM. Established by Congress, the AAM IWG brings together Federal agencies and stakeholders to advance collective knowledge, focus policy efforts, and responsibly plan for the introduction of AAM in the future multimodal transportation system of systems.

AAM is a new concept of air transportation using electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to move people and cargo between places not currently or easily served by surface transportation or existing aviation modes. EVTOL aircraft may be powered by hybrid electric systems, batteries or potentially hydrogen fuel cells.

Sometimes AAM is also called urban air mobility (UAM), although potential applications for this form of transportation could extend beyond high-density urban centers. These aircraft, which will range in size from single-passenger aircraft to large shuttles, will bring accessibility to cities, underserved communities and geographically distant regions.

Development of infrastructure in support of AAM is underway in cities today, with AAM expected to become an increasingly important part of our transportation system in the next several years.

 The Open Mobility Foundation (OMF) is an open-source foundation that creates a governance structure around open-source mobility tools, beginning with a focus on the Mobility Data Specification (MDS). By creating an open source foundation, OMF is able to offer a safe, efficient environment for stakeholders including municipalities, companies, technical, privacy, and policy experts, and the public to shape urban mobility management tools that help public agencies accomplish their mobility policy goals.
